Homemade Sushi

I don’t think I need to explain much about what Sushi is with all the commotion about this amazing buffet. But I dare anyone to make His/Her own at home. I started doing this because I’m no Donald Trump. I can’t afford those sushi bars everyday anymore. Besides, I just love those tiny treats I even want to open a Sushi bar myself. My lovely wife is a wonderful person who manages to prevent me from going to Japan to learn directly from a true Itamae.

Sushi is just like sandwiches, replace the bread with rice, ham with fishes, and use different spices. But there are two challenges here; first your mother or most people you know won’t be able to teach you how to make it the right way and the stores won’t have the ingredients ready like they have for sandwiches. You have to do it your own. And to make it worse, sushi is a visual culinary. A text only recipe will lead you to a completely new kind of food.

American Sushi Variations

Sushi has become a popular dish in North America. Chefs are created new dishes specifically designed to suit the American palate. Many of the dishes such as the California roll while very popular in the US is practically nonexistent in the east.

The California roll was the original American sushi variation. It includes avocado, imitation crab, and cucumber. It is typically made uramaki, so that the rice is on the outside with the nori inside. Similar to the California roll is the Caterpillar roll which adds unagi. The Spider roll uses real soft shell crab and has other fillings such as cucumber, avocado, sprouts, roe, and spicy mayonnaise.

Salmon is a popular sushi ingredient and has inspired many creations.

The most common is the Philadelphia roll which has smoked salmon, cream cheese, and cucumber. The Salmon roll has grilled… Continue reading

All About Sushi

In the beginning, the components of sushi were eaten separately, but in recent years, it had been sold as a food on the go which can be eaten with one’s hands. Until today, sushi is known to have a mixture of very simple flavors and topped with wasabi and sauce. With the many variations of sushi, some people have the difficulty telling them apart. Here are the most basic sushi types that are served in many Japanese restaurants.

Sashimi: This type of food is made out of plainly fresh and raw fish that is ideally served elegantly on a platter after being chilled. The fresh fish is sliced thinly and is usually placed on a plate with garnishing. Raw vegetables like lettuce, radish, carrots, cucumber, and seaweeds are commonly placed on the plate to make the sashimi look delectable. Citrus fruits or sauces are also made available to add more variation to the dish.

It is served with sauces that are mixed together with wasabi or red pepper.

Maki Sushi: The use of thin sheets of crisp, dried seaweed sets the Maki Sushi apart from other kinds of sushi. Strips of… Continue reading
